The Atkins Diet is probably the diet that I hated the most. I had no energy. The primary concept behind the Atkins diet it to limit the amount of carbohydrates that you consume. Carbohydrates are what your body burns to generate energy. When you cut down on these your body has to resort to burning stored energy-- fat.
In theory this diet works extremely well; however, in practice it's much harder. Decreasing your carbohydrate intake leaves you feeling very tired. It's like making your car run on fumes... it doesn't really work well. Most people on this diet last less than a week. It's just too exhausting.
Another good reason not to use the Atkins diet is because it's very unhealthy for you. Eating all that protein is very hard on your heart and your stomach... but they don't tell you that. Protein is harder to digest than carbohydrates are, and they don't give you any fuel for your body. Protein helps you build muscle if you exercise, but we're dieting so our body doesn't use any of it.
The Atkins Diet was the second diet I tried, and quit. There's no reason to despair though because I've found a diet that is very easy to stick to and you WILL lose weight.
The idea is called carbohydrate rotation. Basically we're trying to fool our body to burn more carbohydrates than it should. Our body is very smart and adjusts itself to our caloric intake. If you normally eat 2500 calories then your body burns 2500 calories. It takes time for you body to adjust to a new caloric intake which is the foundation for this diet.
You don't have to eat any special foods, and you're not going to break the bank with it either. It's the ONE DIET that I've actually been able to keep to. I used to weigh 198 pounds and I'm back down to 165 pounds.
